Bud Byfield 1923- 2015

 

Country Football will mourn the passing of one of its Life Members this week following the passing of Arnold ‘Bud’ Byfield aged 91.

Born in Northam, Bud’s achievements in football commenced from an early age when he was named captain of the State Schoolboys team and played in a premiership with Claremont at 16 years of age in 1940.  In 1946 Bud played one season at the Melbourne Football Club in the VFL playing a total of 18 games including a losing grand final side.

He played 284 games of country football in the Avon and Goomalling regions and umpired a further 152 games throughout the wheatbelt.

Byfield served as president of the WACFL from its inception in 1973 to 1991, and in 2004 was inducted into the WA Football Hall of Fame.

A 58 year involvement as a player, umpire and administrator, he is survived by four sons by Ken, Linton, Robin, Barry and will be remembered for his services to the Avon Football, the establishment of the WACFL and Country Week Concept and the ‘A Way of Life’ History Book.
