The Big Freeze goes to the Country Tue, June 18, 2019 - 3:46 PM

With MND being a major talking point in the AFL the last couple of weeks it was great to see some clubs help support such a great cause.

Boxwood Hill & Lake Grace/ Pingerup had their annual Big Freeze event on Saturday 8th June 2019. For their third year in a row, the communities have joined together to raise just shy of $100,000 in 2017 & 18. For 2019 they upgraded the slide and recruited West Coast Eagles premiership player Quinten Lynch, who was returning home to his old club. It was a very successful event, where they are  currently just shy of raising $73,000.

It has really brought our two communities close together and the support shown on and around the day of the event is just incredible,” Scott Moir the Secretary from Boxwood Hill states.

“It went off without a hitch on the day and watching the sliders come racing down into the pool was quite the spectacle.  We had 26 people go down the slide on the day with Quinten Lynch also joining in.  He also played up at full forward during the league game and kicked a few goals for us which was awesome to see.”

The Cervantes Tigers lost their 1999 premiership player Shane Evans to the horrible disease in 2016 and this sparked their first ever event to donate to the cause. At Cervantes Sportsground, the Tigers took on Moora as part of the club’s Back to Cervantes weekend, which included reunions for the 1989, ’99 and 2009 flags. 7 sliders tackled the icy cold bath after the annual The City Toyota Tiger Sharks Legends v Northern Warriors match. The event raised $8,000 all going to FIGHTMND.

FIGHTMND is the face of the Cure for MND foundation - a not-for-profit charity established in 2014. Their aim to raise the profile of Motor Neurone Disease within Australia and abroad in the hopes that increased awareness may lead to not only better care for those affected by the disease, but also increased funding for vital research into finding a cure.

Congratulations to all the clubs involved in raising awareness and money to support a great cause.
