The best player on Grand Final Day in the CBH Group Colts Division of the Landmark Championships will be awarded the Kym Curnow Medal.

WACFL and CBH Group made the decision to honour the Esperance legend for his courage as well as services to football and the Esperance farming community.

"The grand final award is usually awarded to the best on ground, but I think given the way Kym passed, selectors will be paying special attention to players showing courage and sacrificing themselves for the team" said WACFL General Manager Joe Georgiades.

Kym “Freddy” Curnow died on 17 November 2015 whilst fighting fires and warning people to evacuate the fire area only a short distance from his beloved farm at Scaddan, north of Esperance.

Kym is survived by his wife Roseanne and three children Tom, Riley and Emma. He was an active member, player, committee man and all round legend of Gibson Football club. Freddy was an unlikely looking footballer who achieved a high degree of success, both on and off the field. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a footballer of the people, a people’s favourite they would flock to watch play.

Kym was a successful farmer at Scaddan for some 28 years since leaving Narrogin AG school in 1987 and, during all that time, he played football for his beloved Gibson Football Club. Prior to that, all his junior football was also played for Gibson, aside from his Narrogin Ag days.

Altogether Kym played over 30 years of footy in the Esperance District Association, including many years of selection in carnival sides such as Wesfarmers/Landmark and Great Southern Carnivals.

A great believer and participator in all kinds of representative football, his proudest achievement amongst a long list of accolades was to play in an “A” reserves game last year with his twin boys Tom and Riley.

• Leading  Goal kicker Reserves twice (EDFA)
• Winner of Hepburn Medal in 1993 (EDFA F&B Medal)
• Played in the Great Southern Colts winning team 1989
• Played in the winning side of the Wesfarmers  “B” Division team 1990
• Played in the Landmark “C” Division winning team 2005
• Played in representative sides at both Wesfarmers/Landmark and Great Southern carnivals from 1988-2006

“Freddy” was a highly respected member of the Esperance Community in football and at farming levels and stands as a true inspiration to all who knew him. His legacy will remain for all of us in what he stood for and achieved.

The Kym Curnow medal will serve as a lasting reminder to the broader football community of the positive impact one person can have and hopefully in 2016, it can be taken out by one of the Esperance colts who will particpate in the carnival for the Regional Districts team.
