Kyal Steps into WAFL Coaching Cauldron

As a Premiership star with Subiaco Kyal Horsely’s playing career was highly successful, but his debut season as a senior WAFL coach is set to provide an entirely different set of challenges.  The 36-year-old, who was born in Kalgoorlie and played 14 games with the Gold Coast Suns, is best remembered for his role in a golden era for the Lions in the WAFL.  Horsely played 207 matches for Subiaco and was a Premiership captain in 2014,2015 and 2018.  Having enjoyed those highs in footy has set up Horsely for the transition to coaching.    “I’m sure it does in..

Western Australia kicked off their AFL National Championships – U16s Girls campaign with a triumphant win over the Gold Coast Suns Academy in Victoria on Sunday.  Three country players represented WA – Mia Carlshausen (Dalwallinu), Lacey McKay (Kalgoorlie) and Heidi Ireland (Collie) – who ran out 62-point winners in their first of two matches for the Championships 12.8 (80) to 3.0 (18).  Despite a slow start, the Black Swans came from an eight-point deficit in the first quarter to kick four goals and take a six-point lead into half time.  From there WA dominated the game keeping Gold Coast Suns..

Nearly twenty clubs from WA have been successful in applying for the first round of funding as part of the Telstra Footy Country Grants program.  More than $2 million will flow into more than 250 local footy clubs around Australia as the initiative is rolled out.   As one of the successful applicants Chapman Valley FC in the Mid-West City of Geraldton can now install behind-the-goal netting to improve safety for players as part of the benefits of their funding package.  Merredin & Districts Junior Football Association now has the ability to extend their football program by adding in two..

First female president elected to CFWA Board

Country Football WA has appointed its first female president, with Mel Sulzberger elected to the role at Tuesday night’s Board Meeting.  Sulzberger joined the CFWA board in 2023 and brings over a decade of involvement in Albany’s country football community. Her extensive volunteer experience includes roles such as Auskick Coordinator, President of Southern Districts Junior Football, and team manager of the U16s Royals Football Club (Albany).  Sulzberger’s extensive experience spans various sports across the country, including serving on club committees in South Australia and Victoria. Country Football WA is delighted to announce the appointment of three new board members.    Andrew Lockyer will serve for the next two years, Andy Henshaw has been elected to fill a one-year casual vacancy, while Mark Blakely has received a two-year casual vacancy position on the board.    A three-time premiership player with East Fremantle in the WAFL, Lockyer also played 76 games with the West Coast Eagles.  Lockyer also initiated a fundraising initiative known as the AFL Rams for the victims of Cyclone Seroja in the state’s Mid-West in 2021.    Henshaw’s football journey began when he played..
